The exchange rate tells us what one currency is worth in terms of another.  Example 1 USD is worth 120 JPY.  There are two types of quotations: direct and indirect.  Direct quotation is when you use foreign currency to tell the worth of your home currencies. Indirect quotation is when you use home currency to tell the worth of foreign currencies.

Direct would be 1 foreign currency unit = x home currency units
Indirect would be 1 home currency unit = x foreign currency units
