To identify the subject of a sentence, you must at least give the example of a sentence out. Without the sentence how can people show you...

A linking verb typically comes before the actual verb but not always...

EX: IS, WAS, AM, ARE, WERE, BEEN, ETC.

I am going to the store.  ("going" is the actual verb; am is more of the when you are going.)

I was going to the store. ("going" is the actual verb; was is more of the when.)

I am running to the store.  ("running is the actual verb; am is basically saying you "are" going.)
