the question is -

a caterer finds that the expenses for a breakfast consist of two parts: fixed costs and cost per guest. If the expenses to cater for 40 guests are $150 and for 100 guests are $225, what are the fixed costs and cost per guest?

i have to write an equation to suit this

let fixed cost= x,cost /guest= y

then we have x+40y= 150......(1)

    and          x+100y= 225.....(2)

 (2)-(1) we get,  60y = 225-150= 75

                      or y = 75/60= 5/4=1.25$

therefore x= 225-100y=225-100(1.25) =225-125= 100 $

hence fixed cost = 100 $ and cost/guest= 1.25$ answer
