Memory
What is Memory?
Obviously
there can be no learning without memory. So it pays to know
a little about how your memory works, and how to improve it.
As 70 percent of what you learn today can be forgotten in
24 hours if you do not make a special effort to remember it,
this skill can be vital!
You
have a short-term memory and a long-term memory. Your short-term
memory is designed to hold information temporarily - a phone
number you have looked up or a sentence someone said. You
remember it just long enough to use it.
You
can think of your memory like transferring sheep into a big
field. Short-term memory is like a holding pen at the entrance
to the field. To transfer sheep into the field ( long-term
memory), you need to deliberately drive them in!
Researchers
have found that information has to repeated or acted upon
in some way in order to be transferred from your short-term
to your long-term memory. Exploring what you have learned,
using more than just one of your senses of sight( visual),
sound(auditory) and movement(kinesthetic) is a way to act
on it.
There
is nothing miraculous about being able to remember anything
you want to remember - names, facts, figures or something
you have read. Anyone with an average mind can learn quickly
to do it. You can learn the secrets of a good memory in one
day. Thousands of students have done it and so can you.
With
a trained memory you can depend on it to recall all the facts
you have learnt earlier, when you need them for an exam or
assignment. With practice of the memory techniques, your concentration
will improve too.
